Qualified Life Events

Whether you’re saying “I do” or growing your family, here’s what you need to know about how your life change affects your benefits.

All About Qualified Life Events

In accordance with federal law, you can only change your benefit elections during the year if you have a life event or employment status change such as:

  • Marriage, divorce (including annulment), or legal separation (a legal separation must be filed with the court)

  • Formation or dissolution of a domestic partnership

  • Birth, adoption, or placement for adoption of a child

  • Receipt of a qualified medical child support order (QMCSO) requiring you to provide coverage for a dependent child

  • Death of a dependent

  • Loss of coverage due to an employment change such as termination, or status change from full-time to part-time for an eligible dependent

  • You or your enrolled dependent gain other coverage

  • Enrollment in Medicare or Medicaid

For a full list of qualified life events, please see the Summary Plan Description (SPD) on BenefitsWeb.

Depending on the nature of your status change, you’re allowed to add or drop a dependent, or waive coverage, but any changes you make must be consistent with your change in life or employment status. For example, if you have a baby, you can add the new baby to your coverage but you can’t add other dependents. For example, if one of your dependents reaches age 26, you can drop them from coverage, but you can’t drop coverage for other covered family members.

Changes will be effective on the date of the status change, as long as you notify Conduent within 31 days of the event.

Required Documentation

When you report your qualified life event, you will be required to provide documentation to support the benefit elections or changes you made due to the qualified life event. Eligibility requirements must be met and supporting documentation received by the stated deadline. If documentation is not received by the deadline any changes you made will be reversed.

If you do not provide the documentation, you will have to wait until the next Annual Enrollment period to make changes unless you experience another qualified life event.

Submitting false or misleading information can result in disciplinary actions.

Timeline for Making Changes

Generally, you have 31 days from the qualified life event to make changes to your coverage. If you do not make the changes within 31 days, you will have to wait until the next Annual Enrollment period to make changes unless you experience another qualified life event during the year.

You have 60 days to change your elections if the qualifying change in status is:

  • Gain or loss of Medicaid or CHIP eligibility

  • Birth or adoption

  • You or your eligible dependents become eligible for COBRA coverage

If You’re Enrolled in a Kaiser Permanente, Humana, or HMSA Medical Plan

If you’re enrolled in a Kaiser Permanente, Triple-S, or HMSA medical plan, you must change your elections within 31 days from the birth or adoption.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • No. Changing your mind is not a qualified life event. You will need to wait until you have a valid qualified life event or you can make a change during Annual Enrollment.

  • No. Our Conduent plans do not allow you to cover an ex-spouse. You will need to find coverage for them elsewhere.

  • If you miss this deadline, you will have only company-provided Basic Life and Long-Term Disability (LTD) for the remainder of the year. You will be able to enroll at the next Annual Enrollment or if you have a qualified life event during the year.
